about a world

"about a world" is a poem about a vision of the future and a boy in the mirror - an idealized version of yourself, a version that lives in a paradise that he chooses to share with you to show you that it's not as far out of reach as you might think.

I met a boy today, the picture of bliss,
and with me he shared a secret.
A confession so honest it made my heart stutter,
so grand I could hardly believe it.
He spoke of a place where all could be free,
a world that is safe, a home that is warm,
a hearth always lit, honest smiles ever-present,
where you’re loved no matter how you were born.
He spun the tale so well I could feel it,
I flew to the light, wax wings be damned,
I felt his arms bring me further up yet,
with the promise of heaven, we flew hand in hand.
My wings slipped from me, but I saw it all
as I fell to the inky black sea.
I opened my eyes to the sight of a mirror,
his reflection smiling at me.
The world he painted is true, it is real,
and soon, so soon, it shall rise.
If you look closely at your own mirror
you’ll see its fragments in your eyes.
